Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) has decided to join the coal power plant construction project in Vietnam despite environmental protests.
The state-owned utility firm said its board on Monday finally approved a proposal to participate in the $2.2 billion Vung Ang 2 project of building a 1,200-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Ha Tinh Province, Vietnam.
KEPCO will acquire a 40 percent stake in Vung Ang 2 project, with Japan’s Mitsubishi Corp. holding another 40 percent. Korean firms Samsung C&T and Doosan Heavy Industries are also expected to join the project as engineering, procurement and construction contractors.
The decision comes despite strong protests from environmental groups that argue the project is against the Korean government’s “green” initiatives of weaning the country off from fossil fuels.
A civic environmental group on the same day held a rally in Seoul to protest KEPCO’s decision, stressing that building the coal power plant would only accelerate the global climate change.
The ruling Democratic Party is also preparing to propose a law banning overseas coal power plant projects by Korean firms.
The state power company, however, has defended its decision, saying that enforcing the development of renewable energy that ignores the reality would only harm the local environment. According to its study, only 9.3 percent of solar power projects in Vietnam have been executed due to the country’s unfavorable environmental conditions.
KEPCO estimates its 40 percent stake investment in the Vung Ang 2 project to deliver a profit of $610 million, plus additional $130 million income from technology consulting services.
On Tuesday, KEPCO shares lost 1.46 percent to close at 20,300 won ($17.54) in Seoul.
